The Active Sun
- Plages: chromospheric brightenings due to a higher density and
temperatures.
- Facula: long-lived, enhanced white light regions which appear
in the photosphere.
- Spicules: small jet-like spikes of gas rising vertically
through the chromosphere.
- Fibrils: short-lived horizontal strands of gas.
- Prominences: stable structures of suspended gas millions
km long on the solar limb.
- Filaments: similar to prominences, but when seen on the solar
disk, the suspended gas absorbs more photospheric energy than it
gives off.
